I’m an American living in Kunming, China and recently purchased the Insight Guides for China and Southeast Asia. For the actual nuts and bolts of traveling, (e.g. addresses and phone numbers of lodgings, plus certain travel and adventure services) guides such as Lonely Planet may be more suitable. However, for photos and encyclopedic information on the countries and places one wants to know more about, the Insight Guides can’t be beat. Their very name says it all. They are packed with information on the history, culture, sociopolitical situation, and sights found in each country. If you really want to know what makes each place truly unique (through history, anthropology, geography, etc) you could probably do no better than the Insight Guides.
